Airborne Bob

Bob was in an airborne artillery unit of the Texas National Guard, which meant that he had to get through jump school at Fort Benning by making five successful jumps in the last week of jump school and then continue to make a jump every three months in reserves. A good brother-in-law, he helped me get into his unit near the end of the Vietnam War,so I went to watch a jump to see what I was getting into. The C-130 lumbered over a marshy area on the Winnie highway and parachutes began popping out on both sides. One jumper floated away from the pack. Much later, a tired, muddy Murphy came walking out of the marsh. The parachute gods were unkind to Bob. In jump school they taught us how to deal with 4 or 5 malfunctions that might occur. I think Bob experienced every one of them. Thanks, Bob, for taking the bad rides for all of us.
